Ice Study

In general, we don't get huge icicles on this house. We get some small ones from time to time, but nothing spectacular. But after last weekend's major snow, we had an ice garden on the back of the house. The snow on the roof was deep; sculpted and drifted by the wind. The icicles grew each day, and as they would partially thaw and then refreeze, they were twisted and stunted in some really cool patterns.

These shots were taken on the 9th, 11th, and 12th.

Here's a shot of the general formation:
This one is after a day of sun, but not warm enough temps to melt everything:
Please ignore the unsightly dog run!
I enjoyed the contrasts between the sunnier photos and the cloudier ones.
And while the entire formation itself was very interesting, I found some real interest through zooming in and getting directly under the ice, shooting up.

And today, with our 40 degree temps and sunny skies, the ice has all fallen off the house. It's sitting in piles that could take a day or two to melt if it gets cold again.

My favorites here are the fourth one where you capture very blue sky behind the icicles--beautiful contrast. And I also really like the strangeness of the shot you took probably looking up right into the cicles.
