For Lou: "What is that ship that looks so cool?"

In the comments on a post the other day about weird stuff in nature, Lou asked, "What is that ship that looks so cool?"

The short answer is, I have absolutely no idea.
This ship, or boat, or whatever you would call it, sits in Dunkirk Harbor in Dunkirk, NY. I drive by there when I'm coming back from the reservation. Some people go to the res for the gambling. I go for the cheap smokes.

Anyway, Dunkirk Harbor is a pretty little place. It's down a steep embankment from the main road, and as you pull in, you see the harbor and Lake Erie behind. It's all very pretty.

Except off to the right, you see this bizarre ship that's just sitting beside the beach. The pictures above were taken last week, but the pictures that follow are all from last summer.

I don't know what this ship is, or what its purpose once was. It looks like something you'd find at an amusement park...."Cap'n Hook's Cove," or "Davy Jones' Wonders of the Deep," or something.

Maybe it used to be a little scenic tour boat or something.

Now it sits surrounded by orange plastic fencing and assorted debris,

its prow still pointing rather forlornely towards Lake Erie, as if the ship is just waiting to be back in the water again.

Wow! So it's not some random boat you just happened upon. You actually have a relationship with this boat! I agree with all your observations: it should be at an amusement park and it definitely looks forlorn.

I was looking at a map of the location of Erie on Lake Erie so that I can understand your geographical relationship to these beautiful places. That lake affords you much to look at, and this pirate ship is just pure roadside attraction! LOL Love it!
